We interviewed Giorgio Bartoli, digital collage artist known by his instagram username giorgiobart_. We discussed various topics such as what roles he feels the artist plays in society, as well as his top 3 artists tools that he would bring if he were stranded on an island. Welcome our October 2017 Artist of the Month!

Who are you and what do you do?

I’m Giorgio Bartoli, I am 23 years old, and I recently started using Photoshop three months ago as a passion and as a hobby. I graduated from school after studying pastry baking, and I currently work in a pastry shop. However, my plans for the future are oriented in graphic design and mixed media art.

Where are you currently located?

Currently I’m located in Ceccano, a small town in Italy (that is the place where I was born).

What role does the artist have in society?

In my opinion, the artist has a main role in society: to entertain people by stimulating and encouraging them. Sometimes people forget that there are multiple realities around us. Artists help society to believe in something that is far from their reality.

Who are your favorite artists or inspirations?

This is a hard question for me, because I studied at the Fine Art Academy in Rome for 1 year and I love art!  I like many artists from many [different] media backgrounds, ranging from painting and sculpture to photography. For example, I love the Italian painters Correggio, Caravaggio and Modigliani. I also enjoy sculptors like Bernini and Michelangelo, but also contemporary artists like Christo or Olafur Heliasson, with amazing installation art. Other inspirations for my works come from movies, cartoons and comics (that I have been collecting for many years now, since I was a child).

What kinds of message(s) to you want to send to your viewers?

The message I want to send to my viewers is that art is free and the mind has no limit to imagine a new world. We can change the perception of a lot of things and recreate them as we wish. Also, I want  to transport the viewers into lost worlds and lost years, like old cartoons and movies, or carry them into an imaginary, utopian reality with vintage and kitsch objects and situations.

What do you dislike about the art world?

I dislike that the entire contemporary art system is built almost entirely on money, capitalism and on a few oligopolies that control this “market”. Also I dislike that much of the art world forgets that the real purpose of art is to send a message.

What are your artistic pet peeves?

I don’t know! Probably images with bad resolution, or having to cut out complex and problematic figures from an image.

What purpose does your art serve to you and to others?

My art serves the purpose to entertain myself, as well as others. It helps me to explain myself and my vision of the world around me. Also, I’m a strong believer in aliens, so my art also serves a purpose to influence people in that direction.

Is there any other art form you create aside from what your primary focus is?

Sometimes I draw, but very rarely. Generally, the only art form I use to create is digital art with Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator.

If you had to move to a remote island, what are the top three artist tools you would bring to continue pursuing your art?

Wow, I really like this question. Well, if I had to move to a remote island I would bring: 1.) my PC (my works are digital works so my PC is essential) 2.) my music (it’s necessary for me to create my artwork) and 3.) my hard disk with materials, textures and lots of elements!
